Light Kasina Meditation 1 (အလင္းကသိုဏ္း အားထုတ္ပံု အပိုင္း ၁)

(ေအာက္ေဖာ္ျပပါ အေၾကာင္းအရာသည္ လြန္ခဲ့ေသာ (၄)ႏွစ္ခန္ ့က ဓမၼမိတ္ေဆြတစ္ဦးႏွင့္ Online ေနရာတစ္ခုတြင္ေမးျမန္းေဆြးေႏြးျဖစ္ခဲ့ေသာ အေၾကာင္းအရာကို အမွတ္တရအေနျဖင့္ ျပန္လည္ေ၀မွ်လိုက္ျခင္းျဖစ္ပါတယ္ခင္ဗ်ား။)

Me: Can you explain me how to attain 4th Step of Jhana through practicing "Breath In-Breath Out Meditation" or through practicing "Light Kacina"?

Friend: I think "Light Kasina" or "Light Spot Meditation" will be better.

There are 5 Jhanas in that 'A Lin Ka Thine' or 'light kasina'.

Choose a room of average space. Close all windows and doors. Make sure there is enough air circulating the room. And average temperature is also needed not to be distracted. The room should be dark. And initial step should be practised at night. So that darkness is sure.

Then create a light spot of 2 feet size. There may be rim of light around the margin and it is not very important. The distinction is that between the centre of the spot and outside of the spot are completely different. That is total darkness and brilliant light spot.

Before the practise make yourself sure that you do not have any attachment to anything. That is all your personal matter should be put aside. Make clean your body. Have a nice bath. Cut nails and hair and mouthstache, beard etc. Make sure you do not have sexual desire at least a day before. When you do not have any small distraction (like I have a duty to call my children etc etc).

Your aim is that you have to clean all your mind. This means that your mind at any time is cleaned. Clean means 'free of akusala' or unwholesome thoughts and actions. This is the main aim of Jhana. Take 8 special precepts. This 8 special precepts is not 8-Par-Thi-La. This 8 special precepts for Jhana is

1. not killing
2. not stealing
3. free of sex thoughts (not kamesumicchaacara only)
4. not telling lie
5. not telling harsh speech
6. not telling divisive speech
7. not telling non-sense story
8. living on right livelihood

As soon as you have done all these, you are ready to start the Jhana Journey.

Step 1:

Prepare 'The Circle of Light Spot' as I said above.

Sit in a position which suits you to sit for a long time say at least 1 hour without any movement. Otherwise there will be distractions.

You have not to be too close to the light spot. And equally you have not to be too far from the light spot. You should be (your eyes) should be 2 feet away from the right centre of the light spot.

Put the mind right at the centre with un-closing eyes. There may be many thoughts. Do not worry at earlier stages. Just pass them. Eyes may become fatigue. But try it. Look at all the details of the light spot.

Think or put your mind on the light spot only. Your mind will be wandering around the light spot. If this happen it is good. Otherwise try to put the mind to the light spot again and again.

The reason to be not too far and not too near is that to prevent distraction.
